Scholars theorize that these Polish Chanukah lamps that bear two servant lights (as opposed to the singular servant light normally found on a Chanukah lamp), served a purpose, having been used on one of the days that Chanukah fell on the Sabbath, as Sabbath candlesticks. This lamp was made by the technique known as "sand casting". This process begins with a wooden mold that was carved out to create negative space, which in turn is used to make the inverse form or shape to be used for the casting of metal. The mold is pressed into fine sand mixed with clay, then removed, and molten brass poured into the impression. When a mold wears out, a casting from that mold is often used as the mold for the next generation. Those later lamps will have less detail than their older counterparts, and will be one to two percent smaller in size.

In the book "Masterpieces of Jewish Art: Bronze", author Alexander Kantsedikas states: "22 percent of the Jewish males in Galicia were engaged in different types of crafts in 1820-1827, that is, the period to which the majority of the surviving bronze and copper artifacts date in Western Ukraine. He was born in Sinsheim, Germany to a secular family among the pioneers of the local silversmith industry. In 1918, the Gumbels relocated to Heilbronn where David worked as an apprentice in the "Bruckmann & Sons" factory, becoming a certified steel engraver. In the late 1920s, Gumbel studied to be a silversmith at the school of applied arts in Berlin at the Kunstgewerbeschule. Following his studies, Gumbel was employed at workshops in Düsseldorf and Stockholm, as well as in the family factory in Heilbronn. It was there that Gumbel began to design hand-made silver pieces in the modern style. Simultaneously, he produced Jewish ritual objects like a Chanukah menorah or candlesticks. Gumbel utilized polished silver and other materials, such as ivory, in his works.

In 1936, Gumbel left Germany for Land of Israel, joining the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design as a teacher and the administrator of the metal department, alongside Ludwig Yehuda Wolpert. Once in the Land of Israel, Gumbel began to work with typography, ostensibly as a result of Wolpert's influence. Despite Gumbel's modern approach to design, he continued to work with and teach the traditional methods of manual manufacturing, such as repoussé. In the early 1940s, he opened an independent workshop where he produced metal works and Judaica pieces in said silversmith techniques. Gumbel retired from his work at Bezalel in 1955. In his will Gumbel left the continuation of his creation to the artist Malka Cohavi, his assistant and teacher at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. Some of his most notable works: Candlestick of three arms (1930), Silver pouch for Declaration of Independence scroll (1949), Mezuzah case (1960), Etrog box (1975), Mezuza for the Supreme Court (1992), Early Modern Era silver Hanukkah Lamp (1950) and more.

Dimensions:

H 3.55 in. x Dm 2.76 in.

H 9 cm x Dm 7 cm

Material:

Brass SilverPlate

Origin:

Jerusalem

Period:

1950

Large Silver Torah pointer (Yad), Ottoman Empire, 1885

The silver Torah pointer consists of a bar, pointer and a hanger. Jerusalem's ancient Armenian Community experienced a major increase in numbers as survivors of the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the government of the Ottoman Empire beginning in 1915 found refuge in Jerusalem's Armenian Quarter. The industry is believed to have been started by refugees from Kütahya, a city in western Anatolia noted for its Iznik pottery. The tiles decorate many of the city's most notable buildings, including the Rockefeller Museum, American Colony Hotel, and the House of the President of Israel. David Ohannessian (1884–1953), who had established a pottery in Kütahya in 1907, is credited with establishing the Armenian ceramic Craft industry in Jerusalem. In 1911 Ohannessian was commissioned with installing Kütahya tile in the Yorkshire home of Mark Sykes. In 1919 Ohannessian and his family fled the Armenian Genocide, finding temporary refuge in Aleppo; they moved to Jerusalem when Sykes suggested that they might be able to replicate the broken and missing tiles on the Dome of the Rock, a building then in a decayed and neglected condition. Although the commission for the Dome of the Rock did not come through, the Ohannession pottery in Jerusalem succeeded, as did the Karakashian the painters and Balian the potters that Ohannessian brought with him from Kuttahya to help him with the project in 1919. after about 60 years new Armenian artists started to have their own studio’s In 2019 the Israel Museum mounted a special exhibition of Jerusalem pottery in its Rockefeller Museum branch location.

The ancient synagogue of Beit Alpha is located in the Beit She'an Valley, in the north-east Israel. Excavations were carried out the same year, exposing mosaics preserved intact for almost 1,500 years. Later excavations, in the early 1960s, exposed remains of some houses, indicating that the synagogue had stood in a Jewish village of the Byzantine period (5th-6th centuries). The entire prayer hall is paved in mosaic. The floor of the western aisle is decorated with squares in geometric patterns; the eastern aisle is entirely paved in undecorated white mosaic. The colorful mosaic floor of the nave is divided into three distinct panels, all enclosed by a decorated band with a variety of motifs: geometric patterns, fruit, birds and animals. Appears in the central panel. These astrological signs, though condemned by the prophets, were widely used as decorative elements in both churches and synagogues of the Byzantine period. The twelve signs are arranged in a circle and accompanied by their Hebrew names. In the center of the zodiac, the sun god Helios is represented seated in a chariot drawn by four horses. The Four Seasons appear in the corners of the panel in the form of busts of winged women wearing jewels; they are inscribed with the Hebrew months initiating each season: Nisan (spring), Tamuz (summer), Tishri (autumn) and Tevet (winter).

The splendid mosaic floor of the ancient synagogue of Beit Alpha is one of the finest uncovered in Israel. Designed by Ze’ev Raban, made circa 1915-1920. Signed with the Hebrew initials “Z.R.”. This plaque depicts a scene from Chad Gadya, a rhyme sung during the Passover seder, which tells the story of a small goat. Originally intended to amuse the children at the seder table, the song has been interpreted as an allegory for the persecution of the Jews and G-d’s ultimate redemptive power. Since arriving at the Bezalel School in 1912 as a teacher and designer, Ze’ev Raban focused more intensely on some parts of ancient Jewish history as opposed to others. Along with perhaps his famous work, the numerous illustrations he created for “The Song of Solomon”, are the illustrations he created for Chad Gadya. In 1926, the Bezalel School produced a slim pamphlet of Chad Gadya, which features this rhyme accompanied by Raban’s illustrations. This highly detailed plaque is a wonderful representation of a subject that Raban was quite passionate about. Uniting Yechezkel son of Shlomo with Peril daughter of Aharon. Manuscript in Hebrew composed in square script on paper. Signed by the Shochet and Cantor, Shmuel Aryeh b. Dovber and the Maggid, Hillel Ornisky. The Hebrew text at center, although prominently set, is composed within an unusually petite panel. Surrounded by elaborate papercut, featuring a Menorah below and crown above, amidst a multitude of animals and curling foliage, all painted in multiple colors. Traditional Hebrew texts above. The whole set against red cotton backing and housed within elaborate wooden frame. ‘Krol Erman’: 16th Tammuz 1907 The location in which this striking Kethubah was composed is possibly the town, where from 1925, R. Unlike portrayals of “three older Jewish men on a bench”, this scene depicts a young boy in the middle of two older men. It appears the young boy is being reprimanded for some infraction he has committed, as his eyes are facing downward and he looks sullen, listening to what the man to his right is telling him about what he did wrong. Double-sided large pouch. Wool thread embroidered on cotton net. One side has a lion and stag holding flags reading “Jerusalem” in Hebrew, which flank a crowned Ten Commandments. Titled in Hebrew “Swift as a deer, strong as a lion” (Ethics of the Fathers 5:20). “Jerusalem” is seen in large lettering, atop a pair of birds and flowers. Top scene of the reverse side is titled “Mount of Olives”, amongst a plethora of olive trees, and a cluster of buildings is titled “Chulda the Prophetess”, (where her and others tombs reside). Main scene is titled “The Western Wall”, which features the wall and outer structures with turrets and Cyprus trees. The Hebrew date of “1886” is revealed on the bottom corners. This delicate textile, incredibly vibrant in color after 130 years of being created, is a masterful, exceedingly rare work of art produced in Jerusalem by an unknown woman --- likely quite young, a teenager --- as a gift to an unknown individual. Too complex to be a “tourist trinket”, as we know of one other similarly-made textile that is in the collection of the Israel Museum, and is dated 1876: see the book “Jewish Folk Art: From Biblical Days to Modern Times”, page 122. A clue to where perhaps this was made is in the depiction of the lion and stag holding flags, as they are identical to those featured on the crest of Moses Montefiore. In the 19th century, Montefiore gave enormous sums of money to purchase land for Jewish settlements and establish schools in Palestine. This textile most likely hailed from a school for girls funded by Montefiore, and was made as either a gift for Montefiore himself, or another wealthy donor. As to the actual purpose of this textile, since it is in the form of a large pouch, its intended purpose might have been to hold a tallit (prayer shawl for men), as the aforementioned textile in the Israel Museum is a cloth for the Sabbath.

Dimensions:

H 14 in. x W 13 in. x D 0.5 in.

H 35.56 cm x W 33.02 cm x D 1.27 cm

Material:

Cotton

Origin:

Jerusalem

Period:

1886

Hallmark:

<bs-content-loader loaded="data.item!=null" class="ng-isolate-scope" done="true"></bs-content-loader>

Brass Hanukkah Lamp, Salonika, Greece, 19th century. Transfer printed in blue is a scene of a soldier, a religious Jew, scales on a table, and a fox. Titled “Trau keinem Fuchs auf gruner Heid, und keinem Jud bei seinem Eid” ("Trust no Fox on his green Meadow and no Jew on his Oath”), Germany, 1920s. The scene shown is of an argument between a soldier and a Jewish judge. The Jew raised his hand showing the soldier he has to take an oath to tell the truth. The hair of the judge turns up like the horns of Satan. The soldier is accusing a fox of killing his hare, and the fox is shown sneaking away, for he is probably responsible for the death of the hare. The judges table is symbolized by “Scales of Justice”. However, this is "Jewish Justice", where the truth or the facts do not matter, for the Jewish judge will only decide the outcome of the case depending on who gave him the bag of money that he holds in his left hand. Who will bemoan you? Who will come asking you regarding peace?” (Jeremiah 15:5). Signed with the Hebrew initials of Boris Schatz, circa 1920. The prophet Jeremiah witnessed the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem and the suffering of his people, yet penned some of the most beautiful lines of hope ever written. In this plaque, Boris Schatz (the founder of the Bezalel School), invokes this powerful verse with the yearly mourning ritual that has been observed for two millennia by Jews worldwide, hinting perhaps that through his artistic vision of a new “Jewish Art” based in the Land of Israel, the final redemption of the Messiah will come, and with it, the construction of the Third Temple. The outer rim has wriggle- work engraving of the order of the Seder service, along with a pair of birds flanking two Hebrew letters, which are the initials of the owner of the tray. Inner rim has two crowned lions (likely symbolizing Lions of Judah), two birds, and a deer. Below them it states “Seven days you shall eat Matzah” (Exodus 12:15), and “Passover Matzah Bitter Herbs”. Germany, late 18th century. This tray is quite charming in the naïve workmanship of the engraving, particularly those of the animals depicted. The bodies of the lions and deer are wildly out of proportion, indicating that this tray was not engraved by a professional artisan, rather by someone who has no refined artistic abilities, and is self-taught.
